Purchasing Katahdins

The Saskatchewan Katahdin Sheep Association's Membership Directory is available by visiting the Members section of the SKSA website.  It is advisable to talk to several experienced producers, attend conferences, shows and seminars on the breed and join the SKSA in order to gain valuable information prior to purchasing.  Most Katahdin producers will provide new Shepard's with as much assistance as possible to get them started with this tremendous breed of sheep!

It is always advisable to ask as many questions as possible before you purchase breeding stock.  Why is the producer selling?  What is the production history of the flock?  Do they consistently produce multiple lambs?  Are the Katahdins registerable with the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation?  Are the Katahdins identified correctly (do the ear tags match the registration certificate)?  Does the breeding ram meet Canadian Katahdin Sheep Association standards?  Are there any flock health problems?

Remember purchasing a starter flock from a reputable breeder does have its benefits over the unknown of an auction barn!  General factors to consider include:

  • Canadian registration

  • Coat grade

  • Polled animal

  • Quality appearance

  • Bloodline

  • Age

  • Soundness (proven/not proven)

  • Production record

  • Rate of Gain

  • Show record

  • Replacement guarantee
