Well, another Canadian Western Agribition has come and gone and everything seems to have gone over well.  Our numbers slipped a little this year with a total of 84 head entered into the show from 10 different exhibitors.  But, despite a few less animals, the high quality of Katahdins was still evident in each and every class!  I would like to thank all the producers that take the time to prepare their animals and bring them to the show.  It takes a lot of dedication, time and energy to train, feed, groom and get these animals to the CWA.  But, this event is by far one of the best ways to keep “Katahdins” in the public’s eye with interest expressed from the Jamaican delegation as well as sheep producers from England.  We have a tremendous breed of sheep and we need to keep events such as this show happening in order to continue to promote the benefits of our breed.

We were also very fortunate to have had a tremendous sale this year!  The number of animals entered was also down a little with only 15 head in total.  However, the average price for ewe lambs was $348.00 as no mature ewes were entered into the sale.  The average price for rams was $872.00 with the Grand Champion Ram selling for $3700.00 to Randy and Brenda Thomas of Raymore, Saskatchewan!  The sale saw 21 buyers registered with bidders from as far away as Quebec and Ontario. So, with impressive sale figures like these, it is bound to generate better breeding stock prices for the upcoming year.

The “National Katahdin Show and Sale” takes many volunteers to make everything run smoothly and there are numerous people that need to be thanked.  So, to everyone that lends a hand, it is really appreciated!  To the CKSA for assisting with the financial costs associated with the show, Thank You!   Plus, I have a few specific thanks to pass along, and the first one goes out to Duane Rose.  As the Barn Boss, he does more than his share and just simply makes everything run efficiently!  I’m pretty sure I would not be able to continue as the Show Chair with out his efforts.  Another thanks needs to go out to Deborah Schachtel as she does a lot of behind the scenes work right from the envelopes for the junior show, doing the calculations for the purebred show, handling the financial end of the sale and managing to get all the cheques out after the sale very quickly!  Another “Thanks” goes out to Louis and Jean L’Arrivee of Arborfield, Sask.for donating this years raffle ewe lamb.  The raffle lamb is the only fund raiser the SKSA does in order to help offset some of the costs associated with operating the show and sale at the CWA and this year the lamb brought in a clear $569.00.  Also, Mr. John Lalonde needs a special thanks for being the sponsor of the Grand Champion Events for the past three years running as well as Ivomec for their support of the Reserve Champions.

I hope to see everyone back at next years show and please do your best to encourage new exhibitors!

Thank You Everyone!
